Fundamental Probiotic™

The Most Powerful and Complete Probiotic Formula Available

Probiotic Picture

Our hypoallergenic, high-potency, combination of 12 probiotic species contains the most comprehensive spectrum of microorganisms available. Fundamental Probiotic™ is an exclusive combination of colonizing and transient strains of probiotics that provide broad coverage to maintain a healthy balance of normal flora along the entire gastrointestinal tract.

Fundamental Probiotic™ has been scientifically formulated to contain a full spectrum of synergistic and complementary species, and was intended for individuals who want significantly higher quantities of numerous types of probiotic species to assist in supporting intestinal health. Created with over 25 billion CFUs per capsule, Fundamental Probiotic™ uses a proprietary technique to assure greatest delivery of live microorganisms along the intestinal tract.

A substantial number of probiotic bacteria can be harmed by digestive enzymes and gastric acid at some point in their passage through the stomach. To help protect fragile bacteria, all Fundamental Probiotic™ vegetarian capsules contain a pioneering acid-stable technology to protect the bacterial flora until it reaches the small intestine where it is to begin to work towards optimal intestinal health. This proprietary protective agent is an extremely pure polysaccharide material derived from a marine plant that surrounds and protects the probiotic bacteria from destruction by gastric acid.

Broad-Spectrum, High-Potency, 12-Species Probiotic Formula with advanced acid-stable technology

Fundamental Probiotic is a multi-species, high-potency full spectrum probiotic supplement with numerous health benefits. There are 12 important probiotic species with documented health benefits. This potent, synergistic, broad-spectrum probiotic blend contains the essential microflora that promotes a harmonious balance of intestinal microorganisms.

This important balance is needed to assure normal function of the gastrointestinal tract and the immune system.

Every vegetarian capsule of Fundamental Probiotic™ contains over 35 Billion CFU's at manufacture date and is guaranteed to contain more than 25 Billion CFU's at expiration date. Capsule per capsule, this is the most potent probiotic on the planet.

The probiotic species in Fundamental Probiotic™ are blended with a derivative of chicory root called inulin, which is a fructooligosaccharide, or FOS. The fructooligosaccharide acts as a substrate (or medium on which an organism grows) for the probiotics to improve their viability in the GI tract and helps to protect the bacterial flora as it passes through the acidic environment in the stomach. The probiotic blend is then encapsulated in a vegetarian capsule that is Kosher-certified.

High Potency Probiotics

It has been shown that high potency probiotic formulas provide better health benefits than most of the low potency brands found on the market. With a high potency probiotic, there is a greater percentage of the microflora that will survive as they pass through the acidic environment of the stomach and duodenum.

The concentration of intestinal flora is approximately 1 trillion/gram of intestinal contents, and research suggests that a minimum of 10 billion healthy bacteria must arrive in the small intestine to be beneficial. For this reason, we have created a powerful high potency probiotic formula and combined it with a technology that assures probiotic survival as it passes through the digestive tract. Produced with over 35 billion CFU's per capsule (at time of manufacture) and combined with inulin, a powerful FOS, Fundamental Probiotic makes use of both ideas to guarantee the survival of most of the microorganisms in the small intestine. We also use an extremely pure marine polysaccharide that forms a gel-like matrix when exposed to the acids found in the GI tract. This helps to protect the probiotic flora and improve their survivability so they can get to the small intestine where they can start to work to improve gastrointestinal health.

What are Probiotics?

Basically, probiotics are the opposite of antibiotics. They are the live, beneficial bacteria that are nature's way of maintaining proper balance in the intestinal tract. Probiotics are supplements designed to maintain the intestinal balance of the micro-flora.

There are over 400 species of bacteria, weighing approximately 4 pounds in the average adult colon. Scientists state that the intestinal tract should contain 85% good bacteria and only 15% of the harmful microorganisms. This balance is not possible in many people, due to their lifestyle of poor diet, chronic stress, pollution and antibiotics.

The word 'probiotic' originates from the Greek meaning 'for life'. Some common names for probiotics include:

  • Friendly bacteria
  • Beneficial bacteria
  • Healthy bacteria
  • Normal flora

The definition of Probiotics by the Joint FAO/WHO Working Group Report on Drafting Guidelines for the Evaluation of Probiotics in Food, 2001: "Live Micro-organisms, which when administered in adequate amounts, confer a health benefit on the host".

Hundreds of various microbial species live in the gastrointestinal (GI) tract. Some of these are pathogenic, or harmful, while others are essential for good health. Probiotics are the beneficial living microbes that sustain a healthy gastrointestinal and immune system.

Inadequate gut function can bring about ill health in other areas of the body. For many, poor gut motility causes constipation; for others, a poor acid balance can lead more harmful bacteria in the gut causing diarrhea. An increase in acidity from lack of normal intestinal flora can cause GERD or GastroIntestinal Reflux Disease. Sadly, chronic GERD can lead to esophageal cancer.

Benefits of Probiotics:

  • Probiotics helps to protect your body from harmful microorganisms
  • Produces vitamin K and various B vitamins
  • Keeps a balance of the normal flora in the intestinal tract
  • Boosts the immune system

Numerous studies have shown that various probiotic strains are capable of inhibiting the growth and control the population of pathogenic microorganisms through various mechanisms such as:

  • Competing for nutrients
  • Competing for adhesion sites
  • Producing anti-microbial compounds: organic acids, hydrogen peroxide and bacteriocins
  • Stimulating the body's own healthy immune responses.

Probiotics can help to maintain and strengthen the intestinal barrier function and regulate normal bowel motility. In addition, they have been shown to positively modify the immune system in the bowel mucosa.

The proper blend of probiotics can help to:

  • Promote normal colonic blood flow
  • Degrade and detoxify carcinogenic enzymes
  • Degrade and detoxify drugs
  • Synthesize vitamin K and B vitamins
  • Assist nutrient and mineral absorption (particularly calcium, magnesium and zinc)

Clinical studies have revealed that due to their systemic immune effects, probiotics can support against respiratory and skin allergies. Many strains can effectively reduce lactose intolerance. Since probiotics have been shown to degrade endogenous opioids, they may someday play an important role in detoxification treatment.

Western Diet Deficient in Probiotics

Most of us that eat the typical Western diet are deficient in the essential probiotics needed to maintain proper health. The Western diet usually consists of fast food, highly processed food, canned or frozen foods and typically lack the health promoting microorganisms that are required by the body to achieve a balance of normal flora in the gastrointestinal tract. Because of this, most populations in North America and Western Europe are deficient in probiotic bacteria that are consistently found in healthy people eating a diet based on plants, fresh fruits and vegetables. Ultimately, a more genetically congruent diet is what will help to promote health; sadly, the Western (American) diet is not genetically congruent for health.

Adding to the problem, stress, poor nutrition, illness, street drugs, medications (antibiotics, immunosuppressants and gastric acid inhibitors) and environmental pollutants all disrupt the normal intestinal balance of microorganisms. This imbalance leads to further deterioration of intestinal and overall health. Supplementation with Fundamental Probiotic™, which contains 12 strains of beneficial microflora, can help to support the body in restoring and maintaining a healthy and balanced gastrointestinal tract, thus promoting improved overall health.

What Probiotics Can Do For You

Have you ever gone out to dinner at a wonderful restaurant? You enjoy a fantastic meal, only to arrive at home and spend the whole night in the bathroom. One of the reasons this happens, is that the American diet wreaks havoc on our digestive system. It is harmful to our normal intestinal flora. In addition, all of the times in your life, that you have taken antibiotics take a toll on this natural defense mechanism we take for granted.

Partly digested food molecules that are able to pass through the intestinal wall, as in leaky gut syndrome, can cause an immune response and lead to various autoimmune disorders.

Specific strains of probiotics, as found in Fundamental Probiotic™, can help to sustain a healthy equilibrium of friendly bacteria in the digestive tract. Since over 70% of the immune system is located there, creating homeostasis and balance is essential for a properly functioning immune system.

Finally, there is a way that you can naturally improve your intestinal health which will help you deal with:

  • Occasional gas
  • Irregularity
  • Loose bowels
  • Bloating
  • Constipation
  • Stomach discomfort

Improve your regularity and maintain proper intestinal health with our proprietary probiotic blend, Fundamental Probiotic™ which will work to restore the healthy balance of 'good' bacteria (Normal Flora) in your digestive tract.

Fundamental Probiotic™ helps to keep you regular and can help your body expel the harmful build-up of toxins that has developed over the years. The natural probiotic blend will assist your body in absorbing the many nutrients from the food you eat that you have not been absorbing to due imbalance of intestinal bacteria.

One of the most important things you can do for proper intestinal health is to get the proper amounts of these 'good' bacteria which will help prevent numerous gastrointestinal problems and flare-ups. Generally, you will begin to notice a difference within the first week.

Are Bacteria Meant to Live in My Body?

Bacteria are supposed to live in my body? Many people do not realize it, but yes. We actually have 100 trillion bacteria living in our gut. This number is about 10 times the total number of cells that are found in the human body. These live bacteria weigh, in total, almost 2 lbs. These 'good bacteria' or 'probiotics' are bacterial microorganisms that live in your digestive tract.

But these bacteria have a purpose; it is a symbiotic relationship. We give them a place to live and they work hard to help many aspects of our health.

These natural probiotics help to digest our food, produce vitamin K and several B vitamins, promote normal absorption of nutrients, improve intestinal blood flow and even detoxify our body. In addition, they are an integral part of our immune system, helping to kill the harmful microorganisms that find their way into our gut.

Unfortunately, due to the things we eat and antibiotics we take, we kill many of the good bacteria and in the process impair our own health.

You may have already experienced the signs of killing the good bacteria: stomach discomfort, gas, bloating, and loose bowels. Many woman also experience vaginal yeast infections following a course of antibiotics.

For this reason, it is important to take the best probiotic supplement available. It is imperative that you replenish the good bacteria as soon as possible following a course of antibiotics.

Unhealthy Bowel Movements Can Be a Sign of Problem

Some people have diarrhea, others constipation; the paradox of a poor diet and lack of normal gut flora. Gastrointestinal symptoms should not be taken lightly. But, most of the time, improving your diet, drinking plenty of water and adding a superior probiotic supplement is all you need. Of course, if symptoms do not improve, a visit to your doctor is probably needed for further evaluation.

Why eating yogurt isn't good enough?

Although most of us were raised to think eating yogurt provided the good bacteria, unfortunately it only contains 2 strains of the healthy normal flora and only 100 million or so active cultures per serving. This just isn't good enough.

Although 100 million sounds like a lot, in the bacteria world, it's an insignificant amount. Scientists tell us the lowest amount that would really be effective is about 10 billion bacteria per day. Ideally you should be getting more, and doctors may recommend up to 100 billion per day in some cases.

The other problem with yogurt is that humans were not designed to consume dairy products into adulthood. Dairy makes our bodies acidic, further deteriorating our health and possibly leading to osteoporosis. In addition, most yogurts are loaded with sugar, further increasing the body's acidity and increasing the chance of a yeast infection or type-2 diabetes. So, eating yogurt has other potential risks as well.

Using just one Fundamental Probiotic™ supplement on a daily basis will provide you with over 25 billion healthy bacteria that will go to work for you to promote health.

Superior Probiotic with 12 Strains and 25 Billion Live Bacteria in Every Dose

While most yogurt contains only 2 strains of bacteria, Fundamental Probiotic™ contains:

  • 12 different strains of healthy bacteria
  • More than 25 BILLION active cultures in every vegetarian capsule

You would have to eat 250 cups of yogurt PER DAY to obtain as great an amount of friendly bacteria as found in one vegetarian capsule of Fundamental Probiotic™. But since yogurt only has 2 strains, you wouldn't really be comparing apples to apples. Fundamental Probiotic™ is far superior to any other probiotic supplement you can find. Rather than having to take several pills of several different probiotic supplements, you can now take just 1 or 2 capsules per day to get the 25-50 billion CFU's some doctors are recommending. There are some conditions that doctors are recommending over 100 billion CFU's; with Fundamental Probiotic™, that's just 4 capsules.

Fundamental Probiotic™ is created with over 40 Billion active cultures, so that by the time you receive it, you are guaranteed at least 25 Billion live, active bacteria with every dose. Of course, we do recommend keeping it refrigerated as soon as you get it home.

Getting as many live organisms into your digestive tract is important, because you will have a better chance of fighting infection and improving your health. This powerful probiotic should start to help you show results in as little as one week.

Probiotics Destroy Harmful Microorganisms

Probiotics are part of the first line of defense for your immune system. The probiotics found in Fundamental Probiotic™, have been shown scientifically to help increase colonies of the friendly bacteria that are known to help fight off harmful pathogens. One of the ways they hinder the development of pathogens by producing lactic acid. Since yeast and destructive bacteria tend to do well in environments with a neutral pH, lactic acid can inhibit their growth by creating a more acidic pH. In addition, some probiotics, such as Lactobacillus also produce hydrogen peroxide, which has been shown in scientific studies to inhibit the growth of pathogenic bacteria.

Lactobacillus rhamnosum, as found in Fundamental Probiotic™, has been shown to inhibit the growth of such pathogens as: staphylococcus, streptococcus, mycobacterium, bacillus, clostridium, Listeria, Bifidobacterium, E. coli, and Salmonella.

One of the predominant friendly bacteria, L. Acidophilus, also found in Fundamental Probiotic™, produces acidophilin, a natural antibiotic, which is deadly to a minimum of 22 harmful bacteria, including: E. coli, Shigella dysenteriae, Stapyhlococcus aureus, Streptococcus lactis, Klebsiella pneumoniae, and Salmonella schottmuelleri.

By taking the best probiotic available, you can assure you are helping your immune system fight against a foreign invasion by harmful microorganisms.

Digest Milk With a Little Help

Fundamental Probiotic™ contains the important strain Lactobacillus rhamnosus which helps your body properly digest lactose. For those individuals that have problems digesting milk, cheese or ice cream, getting a little help from these friendly bacteria is most welcome. When you properly digest lactose, you may notice many of your symptoms of lactose intolerance, such as gas, loose stools and bloating, go away.

Re-establish Your Normal Bacterial Flora

We are born with a sterile gastrointestinal tract. During the birth process, the first bacteria are introduced. In addition, as the newborn starts to nurse, vital bacteria called Bifidobacteria are introduced that begin to develop the intestinal flora and help the newborns immune system fight infection. By the eighth day, the normal flora is producing vitamin K, a precursor to an important clotting factor.

As adults, the Bifidobacteria and other bacterial flora found in Fundamental Probiotic™ continue to play a major role in helping with numerous processes in the body such as:

  • Boosting the immune system and enhancing the body's natural resistance to infection
  • Inhibit the growth of harmful bacteria such as and E. coli, Klebsiella pneumonia
  • Produce important digestive enzymes
  • Alleviates constipation
  • Repress the rotavirus
  • Treat and prevent diarrhea caused by food poisoning or antibiotics
  • Improve absorption of minerals, thereby increasing bone strength
  • Increases production of a variety of B vitamins
  • Possible reduced risk of allergies
  • Possible prevention of cancer
  • Helps to reduce serum cholesterol

Fundamental Probiotic™ Enhances Seniors Health

Natural killer cells are vital to good health. Since seniors produce smaller amounts of natural killer cells, their immune system is not as strong as when they were younger. By maintaining sufficient amounts of friendly bacteria, seniors are provided an improved immune system. Fundamental Probiotic™ is the ideal way to naturally improve your immune system.

Encourage a Vigorous Digestive Tract

Due to years of poor diet and taking antibiotics, the levels of normal bacterial flora in your digestive tract is diminished. It is very important to stop sugar consumption, if you can, or avoid eating sugar as much as possible. The sugar feeds the bad bacteria in the digestive tract.

By taking Fundamental Probiotic™ on a daily basis, you can assure normal digestive function and an enhanced immune system. This is your primary defense against numerous infections and ailments.

Role of Probiotics in SIBO (Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth)

For those suffering with Fibromyalgia, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome or IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome), Crohn's disease and even Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, re-establishing the normal flora may provide amazing relief. It appears that there may be a connection with several ailments and small intestinal bacterial overgrowth or SIBO according to doctors at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles.

Even the medical profession is starting to recognize that a really good Probiotic can help those suffering with IBS. By preventing the overgrowth of harmful bacteria, yeast and other pathogens, Fundamental Probiotic™ works to correct the abnormal bacterial imbalance found in SIBO (Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth). One of the reasons that people with SIBO can have so many various symptoms is that due to the abnormally high levels of harmful bacteria, they can have difficulty with the absorption of B vitamins and other micronutrients as well as proteins, fats and carbohydrates. In addition, there are toxic metabolites that are produced in individuals with SIBO.

According to Eamonn M M Quigley, MD in his research paper, "Probiotics in Irritable Bowel Syndrome: An Immunomodulatory Strategy", the evidence of the relationship between harmful bacterial flora to IBS provide "a clear rationale for the use of probiotics in this disorder.

Since not all probiotics are the same. Many contain only one or two strains of good bacteria in very low quantities. There are several on the market that contain up to eight beneficial strains, also in small quantities. Fundamental Probiotic™ was created to provide the most bacterial strains available at the highest CFU's (Colony Forming Units). By providing 12 strains and 25 Billion colony forming units, you are assured of the most potent probiotic available.

Most people notice major improvement in after about 2 weeks of being on Fundamental Probiotic™, which is why many of our customers feel that it is the best probiotic available. With 12 strains and over 25 Billion organisms per capsule, the pathogenic bacteria that have been wreaking havoc in your gut do not stand a chance. You should begin to feel an increase in energy, loss of brain fog, normalized bowel movements, less gas and bloating and overall increased sense of well-being.

For those suffering with Fibromyalgia, pain levels should start to diminish and sleep should begin to improve. Usually, during the first 5-6 months of taking Fundamental Probiotic™ most of the symptoms caused by an imbalance of normal flora, or lack of normal flora will show signs of improvement or disappear completely. For a few individuals, it may take a full year of probiotic treatment to achieve these results.

After reviewing numerous studies showing that a really good probiotic with numerous strains of friendly bacteria and a high number of them per capsule would alleviate a myriad of symptoms and ailments related to: Crohn's Disease, IBS, SIBO, Fibromyalgia, E. Coli, Attention Deficit and more, we decided that Fundamental Probiotic™ had to be created.

Fundamental Probiotic™ is an innovative probiotic blend so formidable and distinctive, that it is a known "Super-Probiotic". Although the bacteria included in the blend each have amazing beneficial effects alone, when they are joined together, their effect is exponential; sort of like the affect of a soldier versus an army.

Scientific Inquiries into Probiotics

Scientists have made significant strides in studying probiotics and their potential health benefits. In November of 2005, the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine (NCCAM) and the American Society for Microbiology co-sponsored a conference that focused on probiotics. The conference yielded a report, which contains evidence for the use of probiotics in the following ways:

  • In the treatment of diarrhea (in particular diarrhea resulting from rotavirus)
  • In the prevention and treatment of urinary tract and/or female genital tract infections
  • In the treatment of irritable bowel syndrome
  • In counteracting recurring cases of bladder cancer
  • In expediting the treatment of an infection resulting from clostridium difficile, a bacterium that infects the intestines
  • In the prevention and treatment of pouchitis (a disease which can onset after colon removal)
  • In the prevention and control of eczema (atopic dermatitis) in children

It is important to note that the conference participants also concluded that probiotics, when used as cures, generally yielded low results. In these studies, there was often a prominent placebo effect; consequently, further research must be done including comprehensive clinical trials to ascertain more certain results.

Researchers are also trying to answer these questions about probiotics:

  • The question of molecular activity on a micro scale: in particular, what are the ways in which the actual bacteria's interaction with the body might prove to treat conditions? With new innovations, scientists are now much more able to ponder these questions than in the past.
  • The question of quality and integrity of the bacteria: that is, how do probiotic bacteria that have been combined with foods increase or decrease in their capacity to endure while enhancing health?
  • What are the best methods for administering probiotics? In what amounts and on what schedules should this be done to yield the best effect?
  • To what extent do probiotics combat bacteria in the gut that are otherwise resistant to antibiotics?
  • What role do probiotics play, if any, in blocking unwanted bacteria from permeating the skin or mucous membranes and infecting the body? This is especially pertinent to cases of shock, burns, trauma, or suppressed immunity.

About Fundamental Probiotic™ Probiotics

How do Probiotics work?

The main way that probiotics work is by increasing the population of beneficial bacteria (good bacteria) and combating the harmful bacteria thus maintaining a balance between the good and bad bacteria. Fundamental Probiotic™ contains 12 strains of friendly microorganisms to assure balance and homeostasis of intestinal bacteria. Two species in particular, Lactobacillus and Bifidobacteria, are exceptionally important in intestinal health. These friendly bacteria turn lactose, also known as milk sugar, into lactic acid which then lowers the pH of the colon. The lowering of the intestinal pH inhibits the dangerous bacteria from populating the intestines.

Acidophilin, a natural antibiotic, is produced by Lactobacillus Acidophilus which is found in Fundamental Probiotic™. L. Acidophilus is deadly to a minimum of 22 harmful bacteria that can cause a myriad of illnesses.

Probiotics have been used for years to provide improved health and treat numerous conditions.

Some of the probiotic benefits include:

  • Improving the function of the digestive tract
  • Decreasing cholesterol levels
  • Enhancing immune function
  • Decrease occurrence of vaginal infections
  • Prevent overgrowth of Yeast
  • Break down undigested food in gut
  • Produce vitamin K
  • Produce various B vitamins

While most probiotics on the market only contain two or three different strains of friendly bacteria, Fundamental Probiotic™ contains twelve powerful strains of the beneficial bacteria. In addition, most probiotics have 2 or 5 billion colony forming units (CFU), however, Fundamental Probiotic™ contains over 25 Billion colony forming units, making it one of the most powerful probiotics on Earth.

How is the Immune System Stimulated by Probiotics?

The largest immune system organ in the body is the intestines, a biologically active place where trillions of microorganisms live and compete. The gut contains approximately 75% of all the IgA producing immunological cells. All warm-blooded animals, including humans, live symbiotically with a substantial and diverse population of microorganisms in their gastrointestinal tract. These beneficial or good bacteria provide improved resistance to infectious diseases.

Friendly flora, such as lactobacillus acidophilus, produces vitamins B12, biotin and vitamin K. In addition, they work hard to break down toxins, prevent pathogens from colonizing and stimulate the immune system. The friendly bacterial flora found in Fundamental Probiotic™ also produce short chain fatty acids from fiber, the main energy source for the cells lining the colon. Low short chain fatty acid production has been associated with increased colon cancer and ulcerative colitis rates.

Probiotics and Cytokines

Probiotics may also enhance the immune system making it less capable of developing autoimmune illnesses. Probiotics have been shown to stimulate certain cells to produce Cytokines, which are group of signaling compounds consisting of proteins and peptides. Cytokines are important when the immune system is fighting harmful pathogens since they signal immune cells such as T-cells and macrophages to go to the site of infection.

What Changes the Balance of Bacteria in the Gut?

In an ideal healthy individual the intestinal flora are in perfect balance and the immunity provided by the intestines in sufficient. Sadly, most individuals live with high stress, eat a diet that is not congruent with health and are overusing or have used antibiotics, thereby disturbing the natural balance of intestinal flora. This imbalance not only causes a vulnerability to infection, but autoimmune illness can also occur.

Dietary supplementation with live microorganisms as found in Fundamental Probiotic™ will restore and normalize the bacterial imbalance in the gastrointestinal tract. The probiotics found in Fundamental Probiotic™ will stimulate an immune system response and improve resistance to infections. By eliminating a friendly flora deficiency, instead of adding harmful drugs to the body, probiotics naturally benefit the health of the immune system the way nature intended.

How Safe are Probiotics?

Historically the species of Lactobacilli and Bifidobacteria that are associated with food have been considered safe. Many bacteria are normal symbiotic inhabitants of the human gut flora and their established safety in a variety of foods and supplements support this conclusion. Fundamental Probiotic™ is composed of twelve GRAS (Generally Recognized As Safe) friendly bacteria.

Probiotics are very safe; however it is best to avoid probiotics until you talk to your doctor if you have an immune compromising illness.

Can I Overdose on Probiotics?

Based on the published scientific and medical literature a person can not overdose on probiotics. None of the organisms found in Fundamental Probiotic™ have ever been shown to be toxic or cause an allergic response. For Probiotics to be useful they must contain a minimum of 10 billion to 100 billion beneficial bacteria per dose. Fundamental Probiotic™ contains more than twice the minimum required.

Why Should I take Probiotics?

The main reason you would want to take the best probiotic available is that you care about your health and you want to improve your immune system. Taking probiotics on a daily basis is one of the best ways to stimulate and enhance the function of your immune system.

It is known that the large intestine contains a multifaceted and diverse bacterial population. When the population of flora is in balance, there is metabolic activity that is similar to the liver, and the intestinal mucosa can protect and function properly. Via competition with harmful pathogens in the gut, the friendly flora protects and defends the intestinal mucosa. The good bacteria, as found in Fundamental Probiotic™, stimulate the intestinal mucosa to generate antibodies to the harmful pathogens.

In a healthy individual there is a proper balance among the 85% friendly bacteria and the 15% unfriendly (harmful) bacteria in the intestines. One of the worst things we do to our immune systems is taking unnecessary antibiotic which disrupt and destroy many of the normal flora. In addition, other dangerous pharmaceuticals such as antacids, steroids and chemotherapy can wreak havoc on the intestinal flora. This along with poor diet and stress all adds to an imbalance of the flora in the gut that is detrimental to intestinal health and a proper functioning immune system.

The havoc brought about by the stress, poor diet and harmful medications creates a need to supplement with the beneficial probiotic bacteria found in Fundamental Probiotic™. The probiotics work hard to re-establish and maintain the normal balance of intestinal flora. In addition, Fundamental Probiotic™ also helps to prevent harmful pathogenic bacteria species from colonizing the gut.

When will I See Results Using Fundamental Probiotic™?

When taking a probiotic, results can differ based on digestive health, age, compliance etc. Improvement can vary from a few days to a few weeks in some individuals. In a few rare cases it may take up to a few months for benefits to be observed.

When Should I Not Take a Probiotic?

There are several situations when you may not want to take a probiotic:

  • While taking antibiotics

Probiotics are beneficial bacteria that will be killed along with the bad bacteria while taking an antibiotic. So, to achieve any benefit we recommend that you take Fundamental Probiotic™ after you have completed your course of antibiotic treatment. Please note that Fundamental Probiotic™ will not interfere with any medications.

  • During pregnancy

Probiotic supplementation has been shown to be very safe because it only contains naturally occurring, friendly flora. As with any supplementation during pregnancy, it is advisable to consult your physician for their recommendation and advice.

  • During illnesses

Fundamental Probiotic™ can be taken safely to balance the normal intestinal microorganisms. However, in rare illnesses, especially in certain individuals with immune system compromise it is recommended to seek advice from your physician. If you are uncertain or have specific questions about your illness and taking probiotics, always ask your doctor.

Improve digestion and Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS)

At one time, the thinking was that probiotics just aided the digestive process. However, numerous health benefits have been observed and clinical research is proving that probiotics have a beneficial effect with helping diarrhea and inflammatory bowel syndrome In addition; probiotics have been shown to help support the immune system and allergies.

Approximately 55 million Americans suffer with Irritable Bowel Syndrome, also known as IBS. It is a chronic gastrointestinal ailment and is one of the most common reasons a patient seeks care from their doctor. Frankly, with the American diet being what it is these days this is not surprising. Common symptoms associated with IBS include:

  • Gas and bloating
  • Abdominal pain
  • Changes in bowel movements (either diarrhea, constipation or both)

In addition to the above symptoms, many individuals suffer from severe fatigue and muscle aches. In fact, many of the symptoms associated with Irritable Bowel Syndrome mimic symptoms seen in Fibromyalgia. This includes severe fatigue, broad areas of muscle pain, numerous tender areas (trigger points), memory problems and difficulty getting a restful night sleep.

Doctors believe that there may be a disruption between the digestive tract, the brain and the autonomic system that controls bowel motility and sensory function. According to Dr. Mark Pimentel, the assistant director of the Cedars-Sinai Medical Center gastrointestinal motility program, 78 percent of Irritable Bowel Syndrome patients have bacterial overgrowth in the small intestine.

This is very profound and should offer hope to IBS sufferers. Probiotics like Fundamental Probiotic™, while not a cure, can act as a natural antibiotic and help eliminate the harmful overgrowth of these pathogenic bacteria. According to Eamonn Quigley, MD (Alimentary Pharmabiotic Centre, University College Cork, Cork, IRELAND) the dysfunctional relationship between the indigenous flora and the host in IBS provide a clear rationale for the use of probiotics.

Does Fundamental Probiotic™ need refrigeration?

We refrigerate Fundamental Probiotic™ at all times. Although not necessary, refrigeration helps maintain the probiotic's potency. Fundamental Probiotic™ is made with much more than 25 Billion CFU, so that by the expiration date, you are guaranteed at least 25 Billion Colony Forming Units. To help maintain potency, it should be refrigerated as soon as it arrives.

How Should Fundamental Probiotic™ Be Taken?

Generally, the more of a bacterial imbalance there is in the gastrointestinal tract, the higher the dosage needed to achieve a positive effect. Doses of one to six capsules per day may be required to achieve the desired result.

The suggested beginning dose for those with digestive tract symptoms or SIBO is one capsule per day, taken after a meal, for the first four to five days. Then increase to one capsule, after meals, twice daily. After another four or five days increase to one capsule after each meal, up to three times per day. For severe cases, up to six capsules per day, two with each meal, may be required. Once symptoms are alleviated for a full month, you may gradually decrease the dosage to the maintenance dose of once per day after a meal.

NOTE: Reduce dosage to previous level for about one week if you notice any discomfort at the increased dose. It is very important that you do not eat sugar or any sweets during the first 6-8 weeks as this can hinder the healing process.

Most people notice a dramatic improvement in bowel function after taking Fundamental Probiotic™. However, if you are not noticing an improvement, it is possible that you are not eating enough fiber, or you are eating too much sugar and carbohydrates. Please make sure that you are eating a healthy diet, rich in fiber. In other cases, there may be another underlying condition that requires further evaluation from your physician. If no improvement is noted, we suggest you seek the advice of your doctor.

How Long should I take Fundamental Probiotic™?

Fundamental Probiotic™ should be taken as directed above for IBS and other digestive symptoms. Based on lifestyle, diet and stress, you may want to take Fundamental Probiotic™ every day to help maintain intestinal health and provide a proper balance of beneficial bacteria in the gut.

This bacteria is a probiotic that has attracted the attention of many researchers. It used to fall under the classification of L. casei; it was later considered a sub-species of L. acidophilus and then eventually it was decided that it is a species of its own.

When consumed regularly, L. rhamnosus acts as a colonizing agent of the intestines. This means that it helps to inhibit the propagation of harmful bacteria in the intestine. Described as a transient microorganism, it produces more peptidases than any other Lactobacillus. It does not effectively ferment lactose.

Health benefits:

  • promotes improved innate and acquired immunity
  • stimulates phagocytic activity in the blood’s nuclear cells
  • regulates dendritic cell function and
  • inhibits production of the proinflammatory cytokines TNF- and interferon
  • adheres very well to the cell walls of the colon and can block the formation of enterohemorrhagic E. coli, known in medical circles as the main cause of food-borne toxic infections
  • prevents and helps to quickly relieve symptoms related to rotavirus diarrhea, and reduces the risk of antibiotic-associated diarrhea
  • helps prevent vaginal and urinary tract infections and aids in the production of mucin, a substances that block toxins from entering the bloodstream

L. rhamnosus also improves intestinal permeability in children suffering from Crohn’s disease. Note, however, that its ability to bring about and maintain remission is uncertain.

Tests have also demonstrated that infants allergic to cow’s milk and who have skin problems like eczema may benefit from L. rhamnosus strains.

Among older people, L. rhamnosus helps to increase the bowel movement rate and minimize fecal activity of some carcinogens.

Bifidobacterium Bifidum

When the colon's microflora are healthy, this bacterial species are found in large numbers. They help reinforce the immune system. This is the reason allergy-prone infants and the elderly must have higher numbers of this species. Studies conducted with animals have indicated that taking B. bifidum leads to suppression of total and antigen-specific IgE production, helping to enhance IgM and IgG responses to certain antigens.

Health Benefits:

  • B. bifidum kickstarts B cells to make them more responsive to converting growth factor-1 and interleukin-5 for IgA secretion
  • enhances IgA response to C. difficile toxin A
  • reduces toxins coming from antibiotic-induced diarrhea and C. difficile
  • like L. rhamnosus , B. bifidum stimulates phagocytic activity
  • aids in the synthesis of B vitamins
  • promotes efficient digestion of foods and helps maintain healthy flora in the digestive tract
  • has no harmful side effects but patients with kidney and liver ailments should refrain from taking B. bifidum.

Lactobacillus Acidophilus

This friendly bacteria exhibits high resistance to gastric acid, bile, pepsin, and pancreatin. It protects the intestinal environment of humans and contains more than 20 known peptidases; scientists say that they also act as antidepressants and mild euphorants, considering that phenethylalanine (PEA) is found in cell walls. It also arrests the spread of harmful organisms.

Health Benefits:

  • detoxifies the liver because they have fewer pathogens that can slow down cell activity
  • facilitates food adsorption and digestion, and keeps allergenic proteins at bay
  • helps in the production of vitamins B and K
  • tones the colon by stimulating the size of feces for expulsion

This bacteria is most beneficial to colon health because healthy numbers translate to fewer toxins. It manufactures B vitamins and vitamin K; when the human diet has sufficient fiber, bowel movements flush out 85% of bacteria; this prevents the formation of toxins in the colon (Sandine et al, 1972; Drasar and Hill, 1974; and Speck, 1978).

It fights pathogenic bacteria including Escherichia coli, Salmonella, Shigella, Clostridium, Listeria, and Helicobacter species.

L. acidophilus has been shown to improve ulcerative colitis conditions and also helps in preventing flare-ups of chronic pouchitis. Flatulence and abdominal bloating are diminished with this bacteria. It plays an essential role in that it regulates colonic transit time, often linked to irritable bowel syndrome, and some tests have revealed its ability to control cholesterol levels.

Lactobacillus Casei

Fresh dairy and plant products are good sources of L. casei. It produces healthy amounts of proline-specific peptidases including proline iminopeptidases, x-prolyl dipeptidyl peptidase, and post proline endopeptidase. These substances make it possible for L. casei to break down casein and its derivatives, polypeptides, and gluten.

L. casei releases "peptidoglycan" a substances that fortifies the body's immune system, especially where the digestive tract is involved. It also helps infants with the rotavirus, and has the ability to curtail loose bowel movements.

The Journal of Nutrition Health reported in 2003 that L. casei can help the elderly ward of winter illnesses because of their resistance to digestion enzymes.

Health Benefits:

  • strengthens the body's defenses
  • helps IgA-producing cells to multiply enabling them to face immunological irregularities
  • helps in eliminating Helicobacter pylori
  • supports the intestinal mucosa
  • helps relieve Crohn's disease symptoms and inhibits the harmful effects caused by the E. coli bacteria
  • increases the number of bowel movements and improves stool texture, especially in patients who suffer from repetitive constipation
  • inhibits activity by the enzymes glucuronidase and glucosidase that produces numerous carcinogens

Lactobacillus Plantarum

Vegetarians are one group of people who are known to have good amounts of L. plantarum because of their vegetable-based diets. This bacteria is present in plants, fruits and vegetables. It optimizes oxygen and can transform it into hydrogen peroxide.

L. plantarum can ferment numerous sources of carbon, showing resistance to acid and salt.

Researchers recommend including L. plantarum in preparations that are used to treat diarrhea caused by C. difficile and yeast infections. Patients diagnosed with bacterial infections see an improvement in their condition when they have sufficient amounts of L. plantarum.

Health Benefits:

  • helps in the production of "lactolin", an antibiotic that is considered natural
  • stimulates the increase in the number of cell activities in the immune system
  • helps reduces toxins
  • provides protection from free radicals coming from pesticides and environmental pollutants
  • maintains balance in nutrients, vitamins, and antioxidants
  • aids in the production of many B, K and A
  • helps control cholesterol and triglycerine
  • eliminates harmful effects of nitrates found in some foods

In animals, this bacteria strengthens the barrier function and restores microflora balance. It has been reported that it improves colitis symptoms ranging from mild to moderate; relieves patients who have recurrent pouchitis.

Lactobacillus Salivarius

This bacteria is found mostly in the mouth cavity and in the gums but is also present in the small intestine. It is considered as a producer of lactic acid and helps to prevent the spread of H. pylori.

For people with bad bowel movements, this bacteria helps in restoring the balance of flora in the gut.

The digestion of protein and its undesirable by-products (which cause putrefaction in the gut) is facilitated by L. salivarius.

In medical circles, this bacteria is classified as a "facultative bacterium." This means that it can thrive in environments with or without oxygen. This bacteria can double its population every 20 minutes.

Lactobacillus salivarius bacteria are found in the intestinal tract and in surfaces with mucosa. It possesses fermentation abilities for monosaccharides and disaccharides.

This bacteria minimizes the secretion of interleukin-8 which is a potent leukocyte and lymphocyte chemo-attractant. It offers relief to inflammation caused by Salmonella typhimurium. It also helps in secreting interleukin-10, a cytokine that minimizes the harmful effects brought about by bacterial DNA.

Health Benefits:

  • enhances calcium uptake
  • strengthens intestinal barrier functions
  • minimizes damage from colonic necrosis and inflammation (in animals within the colitis model)

Bifidobacterium Longum

The large intestine plays host to B. longum bacteria and helps in blocking the colonization of pathogens by chasing away bad bacteria and yeast. One notable feature of this bacteria is that it helps reduce chronic diarrhea and nausea when humans take antibiotics frequently.

Some strains of B. longum can produce B vitamins, as well as good enzymes. It promotes the absorption of calcium and can help in fighting tumors through the regulation of markers.

This bacteria has good adaptive qualities in a colonic environment and ferments a wide range of oligosaccharides. It demonstrates strong resistance to bile salts. It produces "serpin" – this is a substances that prevents pancreatic and white cell elastases.

Health Benefits:

  • helps relieve inflammation in the intestines
  • prevents E. coli bacteria from binding itself to intestinal walls
  • provides extra strength to the body's immune system
  • promotes efficient cytokine response to respiratory antigens
  • helps relieve symptoms of ulcerative colitis
  • aids in the digestion of lactose

Streptococcus Thermophilus

When individuals complain of a sore throat or rheumatic fever, it is because they have been exposed to pathogens like Streptococcus that specifically induce these disorders.

Note, however, that there is one strain of this streptococcus that is found in cultured dairy products that is said to generate health benefits.

This bacteria is the favorite of yogurt manufactuers because it is known to break down lactose efficiently and is especially advantageous to lactose intolerant individuals.

Health Benefits:

  • has the capability to destroy pathogens like Pseudomonas, E. coli, Staphylococcus aureus, Salmonella, and Shigella.
  • helps in the production of cytokine – a substance that is good for the body's defense system.
  • improves the nutritional value of certain foods. Babies who suffer from rotavirus have been relieved when fed formula milk containing S. thermophilus.

Lactobacillus Bulgaricus

A reliable producer of lactic acid. This in turn favors the growth of good bacteria. It is also used in making yogurt. A scientist from Bulgaria discovered this bacteria in 1908 when he was studying yogurt cultures.

A transient organism, L. bulgaricus does not remain the intestinal tract; instead it roams around playing a protective role. It aids in milk digestion and helps in the production of interferon and tumor necrosis factor for efficient regulation of the body's immune system.

L. bulgaricus also stimulates lipid (fat) breakdown and may help control cholesterol.

Health Benefits:

  • generates antibiotic substances
  • minimizes spread of harmful microorganisms
  • reinforces body's immune system
  • helps relieve chronic diarrhea symptoms

Lactobacillus Paracasei

Lactobacillus paracasei is another transient bacteria that helps restore balance in the intestinal tract. It has been proven to tolerate acid and is resistant to pancreatin. It also produces sufficient amounts of lactic acid.

It helps the body in fighting C. difficile and other pathogens. Researchers report that it is also effective in preventing certain cases of diarrhea and irritable bowel syndrome.

L. paracasei regulates the immune system and curtails the formation of certain cancers.

Health Benefits:

  • among the elderly, this bacteria restores intestinal microflora
  • helps fight C. difficile and H. pylori
  • aids in the production of other Lactobacillus strains
  • helps to limit discomfort in infants suffering from rotavirus

Bifidobacterium Infantis

This bacteria is found in children's intestines and healthy adults. It is, however, rare in much older adults.

This friendly bacteria plays a vital role in the prevention of inflammatory bowel disease. It has been known to reduce inflammation in animals with colitis. People who have insufficient amounts of B. infantis are vulnerable to an unusual high amount of pathogens and yeast.

Together with L. acidophilus, B. infantis can help decrease the occurrence and seriousness of a disorder called necrotizing enterocolitis that can cause low birth weights in newborns.

Health Benefits:

  • relieves diarrhea symptoms in children
  • eases the discomfort felt by adults who suffer from irritable bowel syndrome
  • helps reduce bloating, abdominal cramps, distention
  • regulates bowel movements

Bifidobacterium Breve

B. breve is found in the gut of newborns but during adulthood they are found in the small and large intestines. B. breve assists in the production of the natural antibiotic called "lactobrevin".

Again, it is in the intestinal tract that B. breve thrive in. It is found also in the gut of infants who are breastfed. It produces compounds like lactosidase – which helps to balance microflora by eliminating bacteriodes and C. difficile.

B. breve stimulates the production of IgA in the mucosa of the intestines. It reinforces the immune response levels of Peyer's patch cells in laboratory experiments that proliferate B cells and aid in producing antibodies.

Moreover, clinical tests show that this bacteria can help in expelling Campylobacter jejunifrom from patients whose stools reveal the presence of campylobacter enteritis.

Unlike other bacteria however, it cannot shorten the incidence of diarrhea. In the case of infants, it decreases rotavirus shedding.

Health Benefits:

  • efficiently absorbs carcinogenic substances, particularly those coming from burned or grilled meats
  • tolerates bile acid which in turn facilitates its passage throughout the digestive system

Decrease your allergy and asthma risks with Fundamental Probiotic™

Researchers agree on one thing: maintaining a healthy balance of good bacteria, as found in Fundamental Probiotic™ will improve our ability to resist allergies and asthma attacks.

The gut is the start – that's what some people believe. The gut is where your allergies and asthma can potentially develop. This development is hastened when the gut's balance of helpful bacteria and fungi is changed.

Do you know that despite advances in medicine and in the pharmaceutical industry, more and more people are suffering from allergies and asthma, some cases more severe than others? Two theories are offered by researchers to explain this phenomenon: we are pumping our bodies with too many antibiotics and our hygiene habits are not up to standard. Running parallel to hygiene is the fact our sanitation methods in the 21st century calling for the use of strong chemicals may be eroding our ability to fight allergies and asthma. This occurs because our normal bacterial flora are being destroyed by our lifestyle, diets, environmental toxins and the antibiotics we take and that is in our food.

To support these theories, laboratory tests were performed on lab mice. The mice were fed for a few days with water that had been mixed with antibiotics. The presence of antibiotics changed the mice's microflora composition. This means that the mice's healthy bacteria and fungi in their gastrointestinal tract were interfered with. Consequently, the mice started to nurture harmful, deleterious fungal forms. One of the most apparent of these fungi was the development of a yeast, Candida, typically triggered by the indiscriminate use of antibiotics.

What does Candida do? This type of yeast releases certain molecules that can, over time, significantly compromise the immune system. The immune system becomes weaker and hence is incapable of warding off allergens.

Given that there was imbalance in their microflora environment, the mice were having difficulties dealing with allergens. Eventually, the mice were exhibiting the symptoms of a disease involving allergic airways. These allergic airways are similar to the asthma that many humans suffer from.

The disease, however, was not present in another group of mice. This group was not fed antibiotic-filled water so their microflora remained intact.

What do these two laboratory tests indicate? Allergies and breathing difficulties could very well originate from the gut! Obviously, when we take antibiotics, we run the risk of developing an imbalance of intestinal microflora. By taking a complete, multi-species probiotic such as Fundamental Probiotic™ you can re-establish the normal bacterial flora present in the gastrointestinal tract.

Role of Genetics

Not satisfied with their initial findings, the researchers took their experiment to the next level to establish whether genetics or other types of allergens played a role.

During further tests, the researchers discovered that genetics had definitely nothing to do with it. They stumbled upon the same finding when they introduced other allergens: pollens, cockroach feces, dust mites, dander.

In a news release, Dr. Gary Huffnagle said that changing the gut's microflora has the potential to disrupt the balance of our immune system, and is directly related to our exposure to allergens and the kind of reactions that are triggered by this exposure. Dr. Huffnagle teaches at the University of Michigan and is a member of the Medicine Faculty. He specializes in internal medicine, microbiology, and immunology. He performed the lab work with a post doctoral candidate - Mairi Noverr, PhD – also of the University of Michigan. Their British colleagues collaborated with them on this study.

Conclusion? Their discoveries could very well be valid for human subjects.

Tip # 1: Maintain a healthy balance of useful bacteria (as found in Fundamental Probiotic™) in your gastrointestinal tract.

Tip # 2: High fats, excessive sugar and insufficient fiber can upset our microflora. So can antibiotics and the simple gesture of swallowing. Swallowing the wrong substances can transport allergens to our stomach.

Tip # 3: Researchers recommend that people consume a significant amount of natural fruits and vegetables along with a powerful broad spectrum probiotic after taking antibiotics. Good nutrition helps to restore our microflora more rapidly.
